Wearing head wrap  is a wide spread practice in African countries, it has been exclusive to African women for centuries; they hold a distinctive position and symbolism across various cultures on the continent.

During slavery the head wrap was perceived by European masters as a symbol of poverty and subordination, it was also used as a tool to oppress the African women; head wrap practice endured the travail of slavery in the diaspora and still holds a strong position in modern day fashion, art and cultures. Head wrap wearing has influenced the world greatly.
